Artists Talk | Teresa Hubbard / Alexander Birchler
LOCATION: BECHTLER MUSEUM OF MODERN ART
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 22
Join us for a free evening program featuring Bechtler Curator Katia Zavistovski in conversation with Teresa Hubbard / Alexander Birchler, two of the most important contemporary artists working with film and new media today.
The Swiss American duo share insights into their work, Flora, double-sided film installation based on their discoveries about the previously unknown American artist Flora Mayo, who in the 1920s studied in Paris alongside Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti, and with whom she had a romantic relationship. While Giacometti is one of the most celebrated artists of the 20th century, Mayo had been relegated to a footnote in Giacometti scholarship. Hubbard / Birchler reframe this story from a feminist perspective, and bring Mayo’s compelling biography to life through a hybrid form of storytelling that deftly interweaves narration, reenactment, and documentary.
Flora premiered at the Swiss Pavilion of the 57th Venice Biennale in 2017, and the Bechtler exhibition marks the first time the work will be seen on the East Coast. Organized by the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Teresa Hubbard / Alexander Birchler: Flora will be on view at the Bechtler from September 23, 2023 through January 21, 2024.
This public program is free of charge. Reservations are required.
