Bechtler By Night - "Danstallations"

MAY 20, 5-9 P.M.

Art enthusiasts across the city of Charlotte have made #BechtlerByNight the premiere art event to look forward to the third Friday of every month. On May 20, the Bechtler will partner with Martha Connerton of Kinetic Works and Eco Fab Trash Couture to present "Danstallations", a series of choreographed dances inspired by the bold designs found in the fourth-floor exhibition The House That Modernism Built.

Starting at 6:30 p.m., each dance performance will occur periodically throughout the evening, and will be based on individual works like Alberto Giacometti's Seated Woman, Buckminster Fuller's Geodesic Dome or Harry Bertoia's Sunburst. Iconic music of the era will set the tone for each performance, with hits from Nancy Sinatra, The Rolling Stones, 5th Dimension, John Cage and the Beatles all contributing.

Flavia Lovatelli, director of Eco Fab Trash Couture, will create 60's-style fashion and headwear for the event using recycled materials including VHS tape, silver duct tape, CDs and LPs, plastic take-out tubs and twist ties.

In addition to the "Danstallations", there will also be a gesture drawing and wire sculpture art activity (inspired by Giacometti) in the second-floor classroom throughout the night.

As always, a Bechtler Bingo scavenger hunt will reward the first 100 guests to complete it with a special prize!

Arturo Morales Garduño

Performing at the May 20 #BechtlerByNight is Arturo Morales Garduño. Arturo is a fifteen year old violin student at Community School of the Arts (CSA) and a 9th grade student at Myers Park High School. He has studied violin under the instruction of CSA’s Director of Programs, Aram Kim Bryan, for the past four years, first as a member of the Orchestra in Schools (OIS) program, and later as a private lesson student in the OIS Reunion Class. Through the OIS program, Community School of the Arts provides elementary students the opportunity to study violin in their schools.

With only a few years of experience playing the violin and after overcoming numerous obstacles, including a hearing impairment, Arturo has become an outstanding young musician. Arturo comes from a family of musicians—his grandfather was a violinist in Mexico—and he has the inherent ability to learn music by ear. This gift allows Arturo to memorize a new song every week from Spanish radio stations.

In the past three years, Arturo was selected to participate in the CMS Middle and High School Honors top orchestras.  In the spring of 2015, Arturo was honored as an outstanding student by Charlotte Concerts. Finally, Arturo was recently named CSA’s 2016-2017 David J. Heath Memorial Scholar, a merit-based scholarship that provides him free weekly hour-long private lessons for the upcoming school year.
