Jazz at the Bechtler

“The Sound” will fill the museum in a warm, euphonious tribute to Stan Getz by the Ziad Jazz Quartet during the March 7 Jazz at the Bechtler concerts. The legendary tenor saxophonist once said “A good quartet is like a good conversation among friends,” and this performance is a dialogue not to be missed.

Nicknamed “The Sound” from the unmistakable charm of his tone, Getz transcended five decades of changing jazz styles. A career that began as a teen playing with the bands of Jimmy Dorsey and Benny Goodman, led him to the surprise hit Early Autumn and launched a solo career. Getz soon shared the stage and recording studio with legends including Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Max Roach, and Sarah Vaughn. In 1962, the release of Jazz Samba, featuring Desafinado, landed at the top of the charts and dealt Getz a Grammy. Two years later, the Getz/Gilberto version of The Girl from Ipanema was a smash, topping the Beatles for Record of the Year.

From his early days of bebop in the 1950s, to Brazilian jazz collaborations, to mastery of bossa nova and jazz fusion, Getz was recording until shortly before his death in 1991. Of Getz’s virtuosity John Coltrane said, “We’d all sound like that if we could.”
