LOCATION: LOBBY

JUNE 6

CONCERT IS SOLD OUT

The Ziad Jazz Quartet pays tribute to virtuoso bassist/composer/pianist Charles Mingus during the June 6 Jazz at the Bechtler concerts.

Mingus (1922-1979) was known for his eclectic blend of gospel, jazz and classical styles. His early influences came from church choirs and the sounds of Duke Ellington on the radio, and were later followed by formal studies in trombone, bass and composition. In the 1940s Mingus toured with legends Louis Armstrong, Kid Ory and Lionel Hampton, eventually playing and recording with Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, and Duke Ellington himself. After settling in New York, Mingus formed an experimental musicians' group called the Jazz Workshop for young composers.

Mingus recorded more than 100 albums, which illuminated his creative and diverse avant-garde music. His influential albums of the 1950s include Pithecanthropus Erectus, The Clown, Tijuana Moods, Mingus Ah Aum and Mingus Dynasty. The New Yorker wrote of Mingus, "For sheer melodic and rhythmic and structural originality, his compositions may equal anything written in western music in the twentieth century."

Hear selections via NPR from a rare performance of Mingus's groundbreaking jazz symphony Epitaph.
