Jazz at the Bechtler

Jazz at the Bechtler will transport concertgoers to 1930s and '40s France when the Ziad Jazz Quartet performs the music of gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt on April 4. "His playing was at times joyous, fierce and lyrical, and his intensity was such that he's one of the few European musicians to exert a serious influence on the American art form of jazz," wrote Tom Cole in 2010 for NPR.

Born in Belgium to a family of gypsies and raised on the outskirts of Paris, Reinhardt (1910-1953) is credited with being the innovator of gypsy jazz and for elevating the guitar from a supporting role to a lead player in his vibrant take on early American jazz. Known for its combination of swing articulation and chromatic movement, gypsy jazz has a pulsing, chugging rhythmic drive. This style of music came from Paris in the form of the string band founded by Reinhardt and violinist Stéphane Grappelli called Le Quintette du Hot Club de France.

Listen to Reinhardt and Grappelli play Minor Swing here.

For this concert, joining regular Jazz at the Bechtler performers Ziad Rabie (bandleader and saxophone), Noel Friedline (piano), Ron Brendle (acoustic bass) and Rick Dior (drums) are Andy Page on guitar and Matt Williams on violin.

Concerts are performed at 6 and 8:15 p.m. Each concert is performed without an intermission in the museum lobby.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for the 6 p.m. show and at 7:45 for the 8:15 show. Seating is first come, first served. Standing room only is available after all seats are claimed.
