Jazz at the Bechtler

Jazz at the Bechtler

MAY 1 AT 6 AND 8:15 PM

To celebrate the 5th anniversary of Jazz at the Bechtler, the museum presents a Fan Favorites concert May 1. The Ziad Jazz Quartet will perform songs requested most often by audience members over the past five years such as What Is This Thing Called Love, CaravanThe Champ, Desafinado, Round Midnight, Seven Steps to Heaven and more.

Continuous support of concertgoers and Jazz Affinity Group members over the past five years has turned Jazz at the Bechtler into the museum’s most successful program and one of Charlotte's most popular music offerings. From humble beginnings with just 60 attendees to sell-out crowds of 600 at two concerts each month, Jazz at the Bechtler has put the spotlight on mid-century jazz while showcasing local, regional and top-ranked national musicians.

The Fan Favorites concert is a thank you from the museum to all the enthusiastic audience members who attend Jazz at the Bechtler shows and continue to come back for more.

Special performance by sculptor Peter Rubino

Artist Peter Rubino will perform an "extreme sculpting" event during the 6 p.m. Jazz at the Bechtler concert. Rubino will speed sculpt a bust of one of the seminal figures of mid-century jazz. Watch some of Rubino's previous speed sculpting performances in this video.

Rubino's large-scale works include Mother of All Life, a 10-foot-tall monument that graces the Boyko Research Center in Israel and Angel, a 35-foot-tall figure created for the Walt Disney Company. Rubino teaches workshops in the U.S. and Italy and has sculpted busts of President Barack Obama, baseball legend Lou Gehrig and actor David Canary among other famous faces.

Concerts are performed at 6 and 8:15 p.m. Each concert is performed without an intermission in the museum lobby.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for the 6 p.m. show and at 7:45 for the 8:15 show. Seating is first come, first served. Standing room only is available after all seats are claimed.
