Tribute to Milt Jackson and Modern Jazz Quartet

On April 1, the Ziad Jazz Quartet, with special guest vibraphonist Jon Metzger, pays tribute to one of jazz’s greatest and longest-running bands, the Modern Jazz Quartet. Founded in the bebop era, the MJQ were an outlier in the era of hard bop; they could swing like their peers, but were as experimental in their own way as the avant-garde acts that eventually journeyed away from the form’s restrictions.

Much of that experimentation revolved around their instrumentation, arrangements and compositional ventures into so-called “third stream” territory — the latter a blend of jazz and classical elements. Comprised initially of pianist John Lewis, vibraphonist Milt Jackson, bassist Ray Brown and drummer Kenny Clarke, the quartet first came together as the rhythm section for Dizzy Gillespie & His Orchestra in the late 1940s. They underwent personnel changes before hitting their stride in the mid-1950s and releasing a string of iconic records such as their full-length debut Concorde and most popular LP, Django (both in 1955), as well as The Modern Jazz Quartet & Orchestra and Third Stream Music (both in 1960).

Jackson and Lewis initially shared songwriting duties, and the vibraphonist’s swinging Bags’ Groove became a signature MJQ crowd-pleaser, as it likely will at this concert. But Lewis’s inventive rearranging of a familiar ballad such as Softly as in a Morning Sunrise or Gillespie’s seminal Two Bass Hit into MJQ standout La Ronde — both on this concert's setlist — soon marked him as the group’s compositional voice for the duration.
