Jazz at the Bechtler: Maria Howell - July 5

Get your seats now for what is sure to be one of the hottest tickets on the Jazz at the Bechtler calendar! Vocalist Maria Howell reunites with the Ziad Jazz Quartet for a special two-night performance in July.

Best known for her role as the choir soloist in the 1985 Oscar-nominated film The Color Purple, Howell has shared the stage with Ray Charles, Najee, George Howard, Ramsey Lewis, George Benson, Nancy Wilson, Marvin Hamlisch, Will Downing and Babyface among others. She considers jazz her favorite musical genre. "Jazz has kept me from wandering too far into the sea of uncertainty," Howell said. "I feel more at home in this world of beautiful melodies."

Howell, a Gastonia native, has been known to leave audiences mesmerized with her powerful, sultry, smooth voice, mixing R&B, gospel and soul into her renditions of jazz classics.

As an actress, she has appeared in Tyler Perry's Daddy's Little GirlsMeet the Browns and House of Payne. Other TV credits include RevolutionArmy WivesVampire Diaries and Necessary Roughness. Her films include The Blind Side and What to Expect When You're Expecting. Howell's most recent film projects were the role of Seeder in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, as well as Ms. Sumner in 2016's Hidden Figures.

PERFORMANCE

Concert is performed at 6:30 p.m. with an intermission. Doors open at 6 p.m. General seating is first come, first served. Enjoy light bites and a beer, wine and spirits bar. Standing room only is available after all seats are claimed.
