MCCOY TYNER'S ATLANTIS

McCoy Tyner rose to prominence in the world of jazz by playing alongside John Coltrane for many years, famoulsy accompanying the saxophonist on his 1959 cover of "My Favorite Things". He also had a robust and prolific solo career, releasing more than 70 studio albums and counting. For May's Jazz at the Bechtler concert, the Ziad Jazz Quartet honors McCoy Tyner by playing selections from two of his signature albums, Atlantis and Fly With the Wind.

Recorded live at San Francisco's legendary Keystone Korner, McCoy Tyner's Atlantis has four of Tyner's modal originals played by the full group, a rendition of "My One and Only Love" performed by the leader, Lawrence and Franco as a trio, and a solo piano version of "In a Sentimental Mood." This 1974 album is essential music that still sounds fresh and adventurous.

Joined by bassist Ron Carter, drummer Billy Cobham, flutist Hubert Laws, piccolo, oboe, harp, six violins, two violas and two cellos, Tyner performed four of his originals (including the title cut) plus the standard "You Stepped out of a Dream" on the 1976 album Fly with the Wind.

The Ziad Jazz Quartet will be joined by two special guest performers to help bring McCoy Tyner's sound to life. Pianist Keith Davis has been growing his own unique voice through performing and composing music for over 30 years.  Percussionist Jim Brock has proven to be an innovator in the world of drums and percussion. Within his forty five year career he has appeared on literally hundreds of recordings with artists such as Joe Walsh, Joan Baez, Kathy Mattea, Joe Cocker, Janis Ian, River Phoenix, and James McMurtry.
