Jazz at the Bechtler | Miles Davis-The Second Great Quintet-E.S.P.

Jazz at the Bechtler | Miles Davis-The Second Great Quintet-E.S.P.

LOCATION: BECHTLER MUSEUM OF MODERN ART

FRIDAY, MAY 5 AT 6 PM AND 8:15 PM

The Ziad Jazz Quartet performs the music of Miles Davis during the May Jazz at the Bechtler concert. Miles’ Second Great Quintet hit the ground running.  At the end of their first five months together, after touring Europe in the final months of 1964 and a number of club dates that led them to the West Coast, Miles took Wayne Shorter (saxophone), Herbie Hancock (piano), Ron Carter (acoustic bass), and Tony Williams (drums) into the studio for the first time on January 20–22, 1965.  E.S.P. was the result. For the first time since the Kind of Blue sessions in 1959, the material Miles recorded was all original, and all generated from within the band, a step of self-reliance that would guide almost all the music they made together. The album was named after a tune by Shorter and was inspired by the fact that "since Wayne Shorter's arrival, the five members of the quintet seemed to communicate by mental telepathy."

The Ziad Jazz Quartet, with Al Strong (trumpet), Kobie Watkins (drums), Lovell Bradford (piano), and Ron Brendle (bass), will pull from these classics with such memorable cuts as E.S.P., Eighty One, and Dolores. In addition, as so many of the songs recorded by the Second Great Quintet were Wayne Shorter compositions, the Ziad Quartet will perform five of his songs in honor of his recent passing.
