NEW SOUND SERIES: THE FLUTE IN JAZZ FT. PHIL THOMPSON

Phil Thompson arrived on the Charlotte/Carolinas music scene in 1977, and is recently retired from Winthrop University as Professor Emeritus of Music. There, he taught clarinet, saxophone and flute, and also served as director of the Winthrop University Jazz Ensemble. He holds degrees from East Carolina University (B.M.E.), The University of Michigan (M.M. Multiple Woodwinds) and The University of North Texas (D.M.A. Multiple Woodwinds). Thompson remains active as a teacher in his Charlotte studio, and as a performer/clinician throughout the nation. As a free-lance, multiple-woodwind specialist, Thompson is an artist of various musical styles, classical to jazz, performing on all clarinets, saxophones, flutes and oboe.

He has served as saxophonist with the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra for 40 years. He has played in the orchestras for dozens of artists, from Benny Goodman to Barry Manilow, and performs annually with a number of Broadway national tours, ranging from Wicked and Book of Mormon to Phantom of the Opera and The King and I.

His recording studio career includes woodwind features on numerous soundtracks and jingles for clients such as Wells Fargo, State Farm Insurance, ESPN, and he has recorded as soloist with dozens of artists including Eileen Farrell, Marlene VerPlanck, Jim Brock and Loonis McGlohon. Currently, and for the last 15 years, Dr. Thompson serves as the musicians’ contractor for Blumenthal Performing Arts. He provides and organizes the various local/regional ensembles for the variety of concerts presented on Charlotte’s stages and in their music pits.
