Jazz at the Bechtler: Post-Holiday Blues VI: Many Shades of Blue

LOCATION: BECHTLER MUSEUM OF MODERN ART

JANUARY 6 AT 6 AND 8:15 PM

POST-HOLIDAY BLUES VI: MANY SHADES OF BLUE

Both the 6 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. shows are sold out. There will be no walk up tickets available at the door.

All the merriment of the season is over and it's back to the same old routine. Blah. It's hard not to get the blues so why fight it? Come out and hear the Ziad Jazz Quartet perform post-holiday blues. The song selections include Charles Mingus' Noddin Ya Head Blues, John Coltrane's Equinox, Joe Henderson's Isotope and more.

Charles Mingus' "Noddin Ya Head Blues" was part of his 1977 album Three or Four Shades of Blue, which the Village Voice called "the best composed bebop" they had heard that year. Saxophonist Joe Henderson's "Isotope" first appeared on his 1964 album Inner Urge and has continued to inspire jazz musicians, evolving first in Henderson’s hands for multiple decades before being covered many times over. Its catchy melody has been a springboard for some inspired improvisations from many different musicians. "Equinox" was named by John Coltrane’s wife Naima, because Coltrane was born on September 23, 1926, one day before the official autumn equinox of that year. "Equinox" is a mysterious composition that follows a 12-bar minor blues progression, and first appeared on 1964's Coltrane's Sound.
