SONG FOR MY FATHER: HORACE SILVER
Horace Silver was one of the most prolific and influential composers and musicians in jazz history. The Ziad Jazz Quartet last did a tribute to his music in May of 2012. April's performance of Jazz at the Bechtler will showcase Horace Silver's 1965 album Song for My Father. These compositions represent the quintessence of the hard bop style--an alternative to the light, cool West Coast sound of the day. The instrumentation of his quintet (trumpet, tenor saxophone, piano, double bass and drums) served as a model for many small jazz groups from the mid-1950s until the late 1960s.
Song For My Father is probably Horace Silver’s best known composition because it transcended the jazz world in notoriety and is considered an iconic record. The title track is one of the most covered songs of all time, with more than 180 versions of the song recorded.
Rounding out the quartet will be special guest trumpeter Justin Ray, and Chicago's "Swing Master", drummer Kobie Watkins. Justin is no stranger to the Jazz at the Bechtler stage, having played with the Ziad Jazz Quartet in April and August of 2017 in tributes to Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, as well as Lee Morgan respectively. Justin gained notoriety in the past few years by touring with crooner Michael Bublé. Kobie Watkins most recently performed on the Jazz at the Bechtler stage in January for Post-Holiday Blues, and has toured or recorded with Sonny Rollins, Kurt Elling, Curtis Fuller, Arturo Sandoval, George Coleman, Ira Sullivan and Sonny Fortune to name a few.
Concerts are performed at 6 and 8:15 p.m. with no intermissions. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for the 6 p.m. concert and 7:45 p.m. for the 8:15 p.m. concert. General seating is first come, first served. Enjoy light bites and a cash-only bar. Standing room only is available after all seats are claimed.
