Jazz at the Bechtler: Tribute to Bud Powell

Jazz at the Bechtler: Tribute to Bud Powell

LOCATION: BECHTLER MUSEUM OF MODERN ART

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 7 AT 6 AND 8:15 P.M.

BUD POWELL

Pianist Bud Powell's unrivaled virtuosic style exuded an emotion and power that captivated audiences and musicians alike. Powell pioneered the revolutionary bebop sound along with alto saxophonist Charlie Parker, trumpeters Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis, pianist Thelonious Monk, and drummer Max Roach. Pianist Bill Evans considers Powell the most underestimated figure in this elite group, though Davis himself called Bud "the greatest pianist in this era." Bud's playing always appealed to great musicians, and his rehearsals at home often drew a crowd of them.

Joining the Ziad Jazz Quartet will be pianist Lovell Bradford. Bradford is the Minister of Music at Charlotte's Mt. Carmel Baptist Church and teaches jazz piano at Davidson College. His group, The Lovell Bradford Trio, is a fixture in the Charlotte music scene.
