In conjunction with the British Invasion exhibition, the Bechtler presents the Modern Mondays gallery talk The Decorative: Bridget Riley’s Modernist Sin on January 12. Modern Mondays programs provide an opportunity to interact with museum professionals, scholars and others who present a deeper understanding of works in the collection and on exhibition at the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art.
Riley's work has been associated with craft and the decorative in a way that questions her standing as a creator of high art. During this gallery talk, Karen Stock investigates the critical reception of Riley’s work and the links between craft, the decorative and the feminine in the postmodern era.
Stock is Associate Professor of Art History at Winthrop University. She specializes in late 19th and 20th century art with a particular focus on issues of gender and feminist theory. She received her Masters and Ph.D. from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University.
Modern Mondays programs offer a cash-bar reception at 6 p.m. followed by the program at 6:30 p.m.
Tickets are $4 for museum members and $8 for non-members. Buy Tickets (Tickets may also be purchased by phone 704.353.9200 or at the admission desk.)
