The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art screens Away From All Suns Thursday, November 10 as part of the museum's Modernism + Film series.

Away From All Suns, a film by Isa Willinger, is a featured documentary examining the ruins of 1920s constructivist architecture in Moscow, Russia. Managing a cast of three unconnected characters, each of whom occupy a revolutionary residence. The film focuses on gender, social upheavals and human rights. Willinger's goal is to attract what is left of the buildings' revolutionary past.

The filmmaker works with passages of manifestos by Rodchenko, El Lissitzky and Vesnin as well as rare documentary footage from earlier Soviet films by Dziga Vertov among others. The film portrays the relationships between the buildings and the occupants. In an interview with Uncube Magazine, Willinger states that the 1920s were a period of visionary projects and hope whereas today Moscow drowns in unproductivity.

"What I personally like about the Constructivist buildings is the use of organic materials, like wood, which is in tension with the strict geometric shapes. It softens them and gives them organic warmth. The huge windows admit lots of light and air, creating a pleasant living space. I also think that including communal areas in a building, like a collective sunroof, could help us today to strengthen contemporary society. Services such as built-in day care and kindergardens - as at the Narkomfin - are also extremely progressive and very much ahead of us today." - Isa Willinger

Prior to the screening, opening remarks will be made by Michael Swisher, Associate Professor at the School of Architecture at UNC Charlotte.
