THE EDGE OF THE POSSIBLE: SYDNEY'S OPERA HOUSE

Thursday, March 16, The Bechtler Museum of Modern Art will screen The Edge of the Possible (55 mins) during the museum's Modernism + Film series. This film discusses the rises and struggles of architect, Jørn Utzon, and the dramatic course of the construction of the Sydney Opera House.

Considered to be the greatest building that Australia has ever seen as well as one of the finest achievements from modern architecture, the Sydney Opera House, is re-born again in this beautifully captured documentary that includes a rare never before seen interview with Danish architect, Jørn Utzon and four of his close-knit colleagues. Unfortunately, in 1966, Utzon was defeated by politics and forced to leave the project where he would never visit again. Due to his leave of absence, the interior was left unfinished until Utzon's successors, Peter Hall, David Littlemore and Lionel Todd conquered the project.

From the disappearance of the interior drawings after the termination of Utzon, it was said that he lacked to even create the drawings for the interiors of the Opera House. Years later in 1973 the State Library of NSW took delivery of thousands of drawings which reveal his concepts which was found that was untrue. With never before seen breathtaking images of what Utzon's interior drawings would have been, the film is able to show details of these intricate models. The Edge of the Possible captures the passion Utzon shows for one of his most valued creations and displays the tragic testament to what could have been.
