Music and Museum

LOCATION: FOURTH-FLOOR GALLERY

FEBRUARY 17

During the love-filled month of February, there is no better way to celebrate Cupid’s inescapable arrow than with the Bechtler’s special Valentine’s Day Music and Museum concert, Chamber of Love.

Chamber of Love was the first program held at the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art and this year marks the fourth performance. This special concert honors Hans Bechtler’s birthday on February 14. The late Hans Bechtler (father of founding museum patron Andreas Bechtler) was not only an art collector, he and his wife, Bessie, also celebrated their love of the arts by acting as mentors for artists and musicians alike. They invited artists into their home, and in doing so spread their appreciation for music and art to their friends and community.

Please join us February 17 at 5:30 p.m. to celebrate the Bechtler’s appreciation for the visual and musical arts. The Bechtler Ensemble (featuring cellist Tanja Bechtler, violinists Peter deVries and Tatiana Karpova, and pianist Cynthia Lawing) will perform pieces from composers Igor Stravinsky, Suite Italienne (after Pulcinella), for violin and piano; Sergey Rachmaninov, Prelude for cello and piano; and Dmitri Shostakovich, Adagio for cello and piano.

Christopher Lawing, Bechtler Vice President of Programming and Research, will discuss three of the Bechtlers' favorites artworks -- Nordic Spring by Alfred Manessier, Ad Astra by Günter Haese and Landscape by Nicolas de Staël.

Doors open at 5 p.m. for general seating in the 4th-floor gallery and a cash-bar reception in the lobby. The concert starts at 5:30 p.m. and is generally played for 45 to 50 minutes.
