ANDREW GONZALEZ: BURNISHED, BORROWED AND BRAND-NEW
Fresh off of his Juilliard graduation and debut with the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, Chesapeake, VA native Andrew Gonzalez, joined by pianist Carlos Avila, offers a recital program of works designed to showcase the lyrical power and technical brilliance of his chosen instrument – the Viola! No joking – in the hands of this young virtuoso, your notion of the viola may be permanently changed!
As an avid chamber musician and soloist, violist Andrew Gonzalez, has collaborated with such world-class musicians as Itzhak Perlman, and Heifetz Institute faculty members Daniel Phillips, Shmuel Ashkenasi, Nobuko Imai, and Amit Peled. He performed last summer at the prestigious Music@Menlo festival in California, and the last two seasons with New York City’s acclaimed Bargemusic series. A former winner of the Sphinx competition, which celebrates minority musicians, Andrew is currently a student of Heifetz faculty member Heidi Castleman at the Juilliard School of Music.
Hailed for his "beautiful command of tone and mood…and unruffleable savoir-faire" (San Francisco Chronicle), his "layers of emotional expression" (The Examiner) and his "level of artistry that seem far beyond his years" (Contra Costa Times), Carlos Avila is one of the most in-demand pianists on the classical music scene. His concerts have taken him across North and South America, Europe and Asia.
