BOSTON BAROQUE AT THE BECHTLER: THE BIBER MYSTERY SONATAS

The March Music and Museum concert will be a significant and rare event, featuring the Southeastern debut of Boston Baroque, one of the nation’s leading period-instrument ensembles. The group’s virtuosic concertmaster and soloist Christina Day Martinson will perform the complete Mystery Sonatas, of the innovative Baroque composer Johann Ignaz Franz von Biber. The Mystery Sonatas, depicting the mysteries of the rosary, is not only a technical – and technological - tour de force of its time (the composer calls for no fewer than four violins in radically different tunings) but also a deeply moving, glorious experience utterly appropriate for the Lenten season.

Born in Saskatchewan, Canada, Christina Day Martinson has twice been a National Finalist and prize-winner in the Canadian Music Competition. She has performed solo concertos with Boston Baroque, Tempesta di Mare, the UNICAMP Symphony Orchestra in Brazil, the NEC Bach Ensemble and the Symphony Orkest Mozart in Amsterdam. In March 2008, Ms. Martinson performed all of J.S. Bach's Brandenburg Concertos with Joshua Rifkin's Bach Ensemble at the Turingen Bachwonen Festival in Germany. She performed Vivaldi's Four Seasons with Boston Baroque this season and recently recorded this masterwork with Boston Baroque for Telarc Records.

“Biber’s set of “Mystery” Sonatas — sometimes called the “Rosary” Sonatas — in fact contain some of the most audacious experimentation ever conceived in scordatura, or altered tuning, as the strings of the violin are retuned for each of the 15 works in this cycle, in the process continuously altering the violin’s resonance, the relative brilliance of its sound, and its world of chordal possibilities.“ – The Boston Globe
